Meet the teen curators behind the MFA’s ‘Black Histories, Black Futures’ exhibition
Gordon Parks: Segregation Story – High Museum of Art
For the stereotype-busting "Black Histories, Black Futures" exhibition, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston handed over the keys to a group of students of color. Armani Rivas, a junior at John D. Now he's one of the teenage curators hand-picked provocative works of art for "Black Histories, Black Futures," challenging stereotypes and celebrating African-American history in an exhibit the museum has described as " a centerpiece of its yearlong th celebration. The idea for the paid internships that led to the exhibit were conceived in and was developed as part of planning for the museum's th anniversary celebration, according to the museum. The internships also came in the wake of a May incident when a group of Davis Leadership Academy students said they were racially targeted there on a field trip.
What if curators were teens? Museums try it.
An essential resource focused on visual art from a Black perspective, Culture Type explores the intersection of art, history, and culture. These beautifully illustrated books reveal how each got their start. For Jacob Lawrence, it was his childhood in Harlem where the hustle and colors of the neighborhood inspired his interest in art. His compelling story and those of Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, and Bill Traylor appeal to children and adults alike.
Nor is it the shorthand for a medical procedure. The show features something paintings and works on paper, each chosen by this group of Black, Latinx, and Asian-American teens from the Boston area. We want to become a place that feels open and inviting and welcoming to absolutely every young person, every citizen really in the city of Boston. Plans for a teen-curated exhibition were hatched in , long before a group of Dorchester middle-schoolers endured racism during a trip to the museum last spring. Together, the teens kicked off their paid internships last July.
