Anal sac gland carcinoma

559
The most common malignant tumor of the perianal region is the anal sac gland carcinoma accounting for These tumors are locally invasive and metastasize early in the course of the disease. There does not appear to be a breed or sex predilection for this tumor and no consistent causative factors have been noted. In many cases, these tumors are noted as an incidental finding on a routine rectal examination and can range in size from very small to very large before clinical signs occur. In dogs with clinical signs, perianal swelling, straining to defecate, licking the perianal region, and bleeding, were most commonly seen and resulted from a large anal sac tumor or severely enlarged regional lymph nodes pressing on the colon. In other cases, increased drinking and urination was noted as a result of high calcium in the blood.

The anal sacs are a pair of scent glands located along each side of the anus. Dogs and cats can function normally without these scent glands. Cancer can develop in the anal sac glands in dogs, but rarely in cats. In most cases, this tumor affects only one anal sac, but occasionally both left and right sacs are affected. Anal sac cancer is usually malignant and has a high tendency to spread to the other body parts.

Canine Apocrine Gland Adenocarcinoma of the Anal Sac

Background: Reports of canine anal sac gland carcinoma ASGC describe varied clinical presentations and management and differing responses to therapy. A unifying approach to clinical stage determination and management of this disease has yet to be presented. Hypothesis: An ordinal clinical staging scheme for canine ASGC can be devised on the basis of responses to therapy for a retrospective cohort of affected dogs. Animals: dogs with naturally occurring ASGC. Methods: A simplified clinical stage system and a management algorithm for canine ASGC were derived from retrospective evaluation of a cohort of 80 dogs; applicability of both was then prospectively evaluated in a cohort of 50 dogs.
