June 2018 Program: Mixed Media Fiber Art by Alejandrina Cue of Havana, Cuba

May 14, 2018 By martywolins Leave a Comment

FASA June General Meeting: Monday, June 11, 2018 – 10:00-Noon
San Antonio Garden Center, 3310 N New Braunfels Ave, San Antonio, TX 78209

About the artist, Alejandrina Cue

I was born in Cardenas, Cuba, a city of bikes, carriages and crabs.

My home town is surrounded and bathed by the divine Bay of Cardenas.

I come from humble origins. And I am unique in that I have three mothers, my biological mother and her twin sisters, who had no children of their own.

All three loved to sew, they were magicians at making clothes. They delighted in updating anything that came their way.

From a very young age, my life was submerged in textile trimmings and threads that covered the floor I crawled on. I experienced colors and textures sprawled-out like a painter’s palette.

Happiness, sadness, success, failure, nostalgia, fear, sweet and bitter, ugly and beautiful, everything leaves a mark…holes, seams, borders, unions, rips and finally patches. Patches symbolize improved and restored lives.

My work uses this symbolism, remaking oneself day after day.

Textiles are an inseparable part of humanity. Their restorative nature softens and warms our daily lives and protect us.

I use fiber materials because they resemble human feelings, soft, subtle, transparent, shiny and rustic. I write and illustrate my words to further express myself and I deeply enjoy artisan techniques because they balance me. I am transported to that marvelous world where mind, body and spirit are profoundly connected.

March 27, 2018 By martywolins Leave a Comment

March Program: Carrie Brown, Public Art Curator

Meeting Time: 10:00 a.m. – Noon, Monday, April 9, 2018.

San Antonio Garden Center 3310 N. New Braunfels Avenue, SATX 78209.

Authored by Carrie Brown.

San Antonio River Authority’s Public Art Curator, Carrie Brown, will discuss her work on the San Pedro Creek Culture Park (www.spcproject.org), the first phase of which opens on May 5, 2018.  Carrie will also discuss the process of transforming fiber art into temporary and permanent public art installations and how artists can be involved in current and future phases of the park.

In her role as Public Art Curator, Carrie is charged with building a dynamic program for temporary and permanent public art installations, performances, and events for the new San Pedro Creek Culture Park.  Scheduled to open on May 5, 2018, the project will transform a concrete-lined drainage ditch into a world-class linear park, improving flood control and water quality, revitalizing the natural creek habitat, and unearthing a place of great historical and cultural significance.

Prior to her work in San Antonio, Carrie managed public art projects for the City of Austin, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and the cities of Mesa and Glendale in Arizona.  She has worked in the public art field for 15 years and has led award-winning projects including North Austin Community Garden, Austin’s first artist-designed community garden, Hello Lamp Post: Austin, an all-digital temporary installation, and Uplifted Ground, a large-scale installation at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.  Carrie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from Arizona State University and is the founding chair of Texas Public Art Administrators, a networking group for public art professionals in Texas.  A Chicago native, she also enjoys baseball and adventures with her rescue dog, Lemmy.
